"I intend to do everything... to have one way of evaluating experience – does it cause me pleasure or pain, and I shall be very cautious about rejecting the painful – I shall anticipate pleasure everywhere and find it, too, for it is everywhere! I shall involve myself wholly... everything matters!"
– Susan Sontag

about

Sandra van Egmond is a visual artist, using the camera as her main tool of expression and investigation. She studied Theatre at the University of Amsterdam, with a strong emphasis on visual and performance art and a minor in Art History. During that time she also danced and performed regularly and wrote her thesis ('based on the body') about the changed perception of the human body in modern dance.

She went on to study Scenography at the Art Academy of Utrecht (HKU) and graduated in 2010 with honors.

Photography had always been an instrument in the theatre work, but by the time she finished art school it had clearly become the core of the work. After graduation she has been working on her own photography projects, commissioned projects and also collaborated with other artists. She has been exhibiting her work in group and solo exhibitions regularly.

about the work

For Sandra van Egmond the photographer is like a performer. The performer prepares himself mentally, to arrive on stage being concentrated and present in a state of hypersensitivity.

'Besides the photographed object or subject, my work is always about photography itself: about the act of photographing. I always try to look for a way to eliminate rational decisions while making a photograph. My mind will do anything to get me to photograph a beauty that it is familiar with, but that is not the type of beauty I am looking for in my work.'

'I use coincidence actively in my work. Throwing objects in the air, introducing uncertainties, moving the camera while shooting, making technical mistakes on purpose. I want to overcome the photograph; Be there in the moment, act spontaneously, act faster than I can think, take risk and surprise the camera and myself.'

"En weer is het niet duidelijk, vanwaar men staat en toekijkt, gespannen, haast ademloos, naar de vormeloze opgekrulde schaduw onder de struiken. Of het de kat is, of een vorm, uitgesneden als het lichaam van een kat – en of het nog leeft en spint binnenin, of al volop dood is, opgelost en ontladen – maar dan breekt het eindelijk door de deur, en het antwoord is: ja, hoe dan ook, helemaal, volslagen: ja."
